PROGRESS IN FLYING MACHINES ?
Our February meeting will be a "project review" evening. Our last project review meeting was about a year ago and here is an update on some of the projects we heard about at that time and what we know about their progress.
As far as we know, the only EAA 110 Chapter member to complete and fly an aircraft during the past year is Kurt Schrader who reported a few months back on his Suburu powered Kitfox. At that time, he was flying off the initial restricted hours. We haven't seen his Kitfox since completion but saw its "bare bones" a couple of years ago and noted at that time that the super-charged Suburu along with a very nice instrument panel will make it a first class cross country airplane. Hope we all will get a chance to see it at the Chapter Spring picnic at Bardstown, if not before !
Berry Bannon, after a little hiatus, is back at work on the airframe of his Kit Fox Outback. At last report, he had his eye on a Corvair engine for conversion but don't know if he has accquired a likely candidate yet.
I (Charlie Gokey) have finally gotten my little Ultra Sky Scout to my hangar at Seymour. Several weeks of details (that should have been done before moving it !! ) and some high speed (45 mph !) taxi tests consumed the rest of the nice weather- oh for Spring ! Little 1/2 VW turns up 2950 static- should give nice sub-sonic cruise speed!
Bruce Edsten, as far as we know, is still dreaming of a Hatz Biplane. Maybe Santa brought him the plans for Christmas !
Gary Graham had a busy past year, relocating after a buy out by the JCPS, and hasn't been able to put the final touches on his Jabiru powered Titan II. At last report, it was about ready to go except for cosmetics and final assemby.
We got a chance to see Tom Hubbuch's Sonerai II project a couple of weeks ago. By now, with son Glen assisting, Tom should have both wings completed and be jigging up for the fuselage. He has a Corvair engine that he will be converting a la William Wynne's conversion manual et al.
Don & Joy Jeffries' Murphy Super Rebel is one of the projects we saw on the Chapter's " Bowman Field Hangar Tour" last Spring. At that time, they had the empennage complete and were skinning the wings, which if they haven't exhausted all the supply of cleco clamps and rivets in the USA, should be complete by now and work started on fuselage frame.
Lee Roberts has completed the airframe for his plans built Sportsman 2+2 , has most of the covering complete, and is ready to hang his newly overhauled Lycoming O-290, but, realistically, still estimates another year before first flight. Close enough anyway that he was already "hangar scouting" on a recent visit to Seymour's Freeman Field.
Don Disney has completed the 1/2 VW that he is building for his Legal Eagle. His engine was on display in our Chapter booth at the October Bowman Air Fair and drew many compliments for his workmanship. Don't know if he has started cutting tubing for his Eagle yet.
Checking Tim O'Connors website shows at least one of his P-26s fuselage completely skinned and with wing stubs attached. Tim has invited our Chapter to make another visit to his shop and we are looking forward to getting this on the schedule soon ! Hope to have a report from Tim.
We have a few projects that we haven't had a recent update on, Dennis Martin's Ultravia Pelican, Charles Wimsatt's Pegazair, and E.J. Schickli's Nieuport. Hope to hear from all of them at the February Project Review meeting.
