PROGRESS IN FLYING MACHINES ?

In our January "corner" we made mention of the progress that some of our EAA 110 members are making on their projects. Our February meeting was a "project night" and we had updates and some members displaying nice examples of their workmanship. Hoping I don't omit anybody here is a summary of reports and displays from our February 11th meeting:

Gary Graham- Titan II with Jabiru engine. Has done some "wingless" taxi tests. Jabiru runs great. Had his wing painted in a professional paint shop and this is last major part of his project. Looking to first flight this summer at Bardstown Airport.

Tom Hubbuch- Sonerai II. Wings complete and starting on fuselage. Tom brought the welded up "wingbox" which secures the wings to the fuselage and sets the dihedral, and also an example of a fuselage welding jig.

Don & Joy Jeffries-Murphy Super Rebel. Wings and empennage complete and fuselage well on way. They displayed the completed vertical stabilizer which is assembled with Avex aluminum rivets- beautiful job. First flight date getting closer, avionics to be installed and partially dependent on how much work has to be done on IO-540 engine.

E.J. Schickli - Nieuport & Emeraude. E. J. couldn't make the meeting but reported that his Nieuport is in the final paint stages with a couple of coats of silver and some test running of the Rotax to be made. Still some cowling and cosmetic work on the Emeraude before it gets back in the air.

Tim O'Connor - (2) P-26 Boeing Peashooters!! With the two fuselages nearing completion and (2) P & W R-1340 Wasp engines on order, Tim is moving his projects to a large hangar at Freeman field, Seymour , IN, where they will be completed and eventually test flown. The building of these full scale, circa 1932, fighters (not replicas or reproductions but rather a continuation of production!!) is an enormous task and he hasn't predicted any completion dates yet. Chapter 110 has been invited to his Mt. Washington shop for a project visit on Saturday, February 21st, before he moves. (See elsewhere on this site for details)

Larry Wimsatt- Pegazair 100. Larry works nights and couldn't make the meeting but he sent a couple of great pictures and the news that he made the first flight in his Pegazair on July 17th 2003, and had flown off his 40 hour restrictions by September 20th. Engine is a Continental O-200. The aircraft is a two-place STOL with a cruise speed of 100 MPH, stall speed of 28MPH and a slow flight speed of 18MPH at 50% power. He says that the operation manual for the Helio Courier HT 295 is good guide to flying the Pegazair. Larry flies out of the Bardstown airport and we hope to see his aircraft when our Chapter is there for our June 13th picnic. Photos of his Pegazair have been posted on the "Members Projects" portion of this site.

Don Disney - Legal Eagle. Don and Tom Hubbuch drove to Wick's Aircraft a couple of weeks ago and picked up enough steel tubing for both their projects. Don has acquired a prop for his 1/2 VW and wants to get a few hours on the test stand before installation. He displayed some nice looking wooden wing rib parts and control arms. He will be using acetylene welding on his fuselage. Like most other builders he feels more comfortable with the gas welding of aircraft parts rather than MIG welding.

Lee Roberts- Modified Sportsman 2 + 2 with Lycoming O-290 engine. Lee is getting close enough on his project that he has decided on the Seymour, IN airport and its 5500 runways for his test flying. The Sportsman 2 + 2 plans are sold by Wag - Aero and Lee explained some of the modifications he had made by incorporating some Piper Tri-Pacer components.

Berry Bannon- Kitfox Outback. Berry has definitely decided on a converted Corvair engine for his aircraft and had a nice display of engine parts. He has found 2 engines in good enough shape to provide most of the essentials. Along with what new parts he had to purchase, Berry is estimating a cost of about $3000 to build an engine that will weigh about the same and produce the same horsepower as a Continental O-200. He displayed a catalog from Clark's Corvair Parts (http://www.corvair.com/user-cgi/pages.cgi?category=home) that lists just about all the goodies needed to convert your engine.

I, Charlie Gokey - Ultra Sky Scout w/ 1/2 VW, didn't have anything to report other than that my little bird is shivering in its hangar awaiting spring, and hoping to get in the air. I did bring plans for the 1909 Santos-Dumont Demoiselle for anybody who would like to turn back the hands of time and knows of a good stand of Bamboo!!
