PROGRESS IN FLYING MACHINES
Our June 8th meeting will be a "Builder's Night" and we hope all who have projects in work or
completed flying projects wiil give us a status report and possibly bring along some portion of their work or a set of plans to display. We will have
a short film on Van's Aircraft and the history of the RV kitplanes and then get down to the nitty-gritty of having members give reports on their
projects and describe the details of their display.
Here are some of the projects that we know about and hope to hear a further report on:
Gary Graham has had his Jabiru powered Titan Tornado signed off and has been assigned an area to fly off
the restricted hours. Last Fall, Howard Edwards flew it from the Bardstown Airport to the grass strip at Waddy, KY (old Miles field) and Gary has
been awaiting some decent weather to get his hours in.
Tom Hubbuch has completed the wings on his Sonerai II and is very near to completing the basic fuselage
airframe and empennage. He will be converting a Corvair Engine, a la William Wynne's plans.
Don and Joy Jeffries' Super Rebel won't be ready for Sun & Fun this year (maybe for OSH ?) but plans are for
next year. The last we heard, Don was converting the O-540 to an IO-540, and the basic airframe is near completion.
E. J. Schickli's Nieuport, the last we heard, is complete except for a few cosmetics but don't know if it has been
signed off yet.
Since Tim O'Connor has moved his P-26 projects to the Seymour Airport, we haven't heard much about their
status. We know that, at the time of the move, both fuselages were nearing completion and one was being skinned.
Don Disney has the 1/2 VW conversion complete for his Legal Eagle and should have the welding on the
fuselage well under way.
Lee Roberts' Sportsman 2 + 2 is nearing completion and he is seeking an airport and hangar space to do some final assembly and
flight testing.
Berry Bannon has been concentrating on his conversion of a Corvair engine for his Kit Fox Outback. Airframe
on his project is well under way but he hasn't mentioned a target date for completion yet.
Bruce Edsten and a few Chapter members have been giving a "museum quality" restoration to the Var-Eze
that he acquired from John Collon's estate. When complete it will be donated to the Kentucky Aviation Museum at Bluegrass field. Hopefully the empty space in his
garage will then be taken over by his Hatz Biplane project.(???)!
My own little Ultra Sky Scout has proven to be a very "low and slow" flyer. In fact, "low and slow" would be an
exaggeration of its performance!! Am presently working on some way to get more " power" out of the 1/2 VW via a PSRU ( propeller speed
reduction unit to you, Jose)
Anyway, we hope to have reports from all of the above and MORE at our "Builder's Night", June 8th.
