Chapter 110

Charlie's Corner

YOUNG EAGLES

Congratulations to Young Eagles coordinator Howard Edwards and all the other pilots and ground crew who made the June 9th rally a great success. Several hundred youngsters got their introduction to general aviation on a perfect day for flying.

CHAPTER SPRING PICNIC

A good time and plenty of good food was had by all who attended our Chapter Spring Picnic at Bardstown Airport on May 20th. Our thanks to provisioner Berrry Bannon, Picnic Chairman Tom Hubbuch and his assistants who kept the hamburgers and hot dogs coming off the grille, and all those who brought the delicious dishes for our "pitch in" table !!

Jim Kinsella was there with his Pietenpol and demonstrated the joys of open cockpit flying to any one who could crawl into the front seat - no easy accomplishment !! Also or thanks to Gary Graham for those great photos of the picnic shown elsewhere on our site.

PROGRESS IN FLYING MACHINES

We will try to keep a list of Chapter Member's projects posted and updated and have a few more to add this time.

One we overlooked last time is the RV-6A being built by Jim Woodward. Jim has been working on his project for quite a while and now is working on the wings. He brought one of the flaps to the May Chapter - very nice professional looking metal work!

A "really big" project is the Murphy Super Rebel being built by Don and Joy Jeffries. This is an aircraft that can haul just about anything you would want to take to camp at OSH including maybe the kitchen sink!! They received their kit In January and are well under way, starting with the tail surfaces. Power will be a Lycoming IO-540 with a constant speed prop.

New Chapter member Rich Wells is just starting on his "scratch built" Wittman Tailwind. This a project that combines lots of challenging skills, welding, woodwork, fabric covering. First step on his project will be the building of the wooden, plywood covered, wings.

Other projects previously listed: Nieuport by E. J. Schickli. Nieuport by Eliot Willoughy, 67% Curtiss Jenny by Chris Davis, Kitfox Outback by Berry Bannon; Sonerai 2 by Tom Hubbuch.

Email info your project to projects@eaa110.org

and how about some invites for Chapter project visits?

TECH NOTE

In an article in the June issue of EXPERIMENTER magazine, the writer states in two different places that the pre-mixed (gasoline and 2 cycle oil) fuel used in most ultra-lights, should not be used if the mix is over 12 hours old !!. Talking to several ultralighters, they all said that this seems to be an extreme precaution but all agreed that there is some deterioration in fuel quality, i.e. octane rating, for fuel that is stored for more than a few weeks. This seems to be more critical for two cycle engines which run at high RPMS and close to maximum rated temperatures. For four cycle regular aircraft engines loss of of a couple of octane points doesn't seem as critical because we are normally using fuel that is rated several octane points higher than engine requirements. However, old fuel is never good and the moral of this seems to be: If you haven't flown old Rickety Struts for a few months, especially if it is fueled with what passes for auto gas these days, it might be better to drain that old stuff out and feed it to your lawn mower or weed eater ! !
