Here is Howard Edwards story of getting the Young Eagles started in Chapter 110.
By 1997 EAA’s Young Eagle program was a proven success and I thought it would be fun to take charge. On one of our first programs we flew approximately 300 “kids”. We had great cooperation with the flying services and pilots who donated their time, planes and fuel. The we read that another Chapter, in Iowa I believe, had flown over 500 in one event. We said to ourselves, “We can beat that” so the following year we did! We claim the unofficial record of having flown more than 650 kids in one day!
For this, Chapter 110 was honored at the annual Oshkosh AirVenture. Trophies were presented to Jack Kuhns, Jim Nolen and me by Chuck Yeager who was the Young Eagles Program honorary chairman at the time. Again we had outstanding cooperation by all involved but decided we needed parallel runways if we were to try this again.
The Chapter continues with its very successful Young Eagles Program, providing free flights to young people, ages 8 to 18.
